Lot 257
Caracalla, 198-217. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.87 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation from an irregular mint, 203 or slightly later. ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS Laureate and draped bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. Rev. PONT TR P VI COS Roma standing front, head to left, holding Victory with wreath and palm in her right hand and inverted spear with her left. BMC p. 241 = Reka-Devnia p. 114. Cohen -. RIC -. Very rare. A fresh, clear and sharply struck coin. Minor flan crack, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From the collection of Yves Gunzenreiner.

This is a curious coin in that it combines an obverse of 201 with a reverse of 203. While the style is excellent, the lettering is very slightly off, indicating a very well made contemporary imitation rather than a mint error from the regular Rome mint.
